Early Red Flags of Teen Substance Use

Published on November 12th, 2019

We’ve all been there: our teenage years. While there are many exciting parts of being a teenager, these years also come with tons of change and stress. Hormones are racing, there are mood swings and finding and keeping friends is a challenge on its own. While some behavior changes are to be expected during these years, it’s important that you keep a close eye on your child to ensure they are staying safe and making healthy choices. You may want to consider substance abuse treatment in St. Paul or Minneapolis if you notice the following:

  • Completely losing interest in activities they once enjoyed
  • Switching friend groups
  • A significant increase in how much they are sleeping
  • Breaking the rules
  • Physical changes such as weight loss, bloody, watery eyes, tremors, or frequent nosebleeds

Spot Signs Early

The above red flags could be a sign that your teenager is abusing medications or involved in drug or alcohol use. It’s important to note that addiction is a progressive disease, so the warning signs can be tricky to spot in the early stages. However, unhealthy habits can quickly spiral into a full-blown addiction if not addressed as soon as possible.

More Behavioral and Physical Symptoms

More specific behavioral and physical symptoms include avoiding eye contact, stealing, secretive phone calls, locking bedroom doors, missing school or work, slipping behind in school, poor hygiene, changes in appetite, larger or smaller pupils than normal, extreme tiredness, anxiety, fidgeting, and many more. At the end of the day, you know your child best, so if your gut is telling you that something is off, seek substance abuse treatment in St. Paul.
