As providers of adult mental health treatment, we are well aware of all of the mental health stigmas that exist in our field. As subtle or unintentional as these stigmas are, they may make it more difficult for people to come forward and seek the help that they need. It is important to help end the negative stigma that surrounds mental illness. Here are a few ways that you can participate in the battle against ending the stigma of mental health.
Educate Yourself
Chances are, if people understood the importance of mental health, there would not be such a negative stigma around it. Talk openly with those who suffer from a mental illness or a mental struggle, or if you are struggling yourself, take the time to educate those around you. The more people know, the better.
Be Honest and Open
Although it’s not always easy to open up about your mental illness, doing so can have a profound effect and give others the courage to do the same. If you can have an impact on just one person’s outlook, it is worth it!
Mental Health is Equivalent to Physical Health
Since when did it become okay to go to the doctor for a physical problem but not a mental problem? If you wouldn’t make fun of someone for cancer, you shouldn’t make fun of someone with anxiety or depression.
